"I create tactile art on canvas. Three dimensional art that is incredibly ‘touchy feely’.
On several occasions, I have witnessed someone looking at a piece of my work hung in a gallery and they have reached out to touch the textured surface and then stopped themselves as they realised what they were about to do. Their instinct was to reach out and touch the work, but then they see an invisible warning sign above a piece of art that says, ‘Look, but don’t touch!’ I encourage them to go ahead and reach out to it. In fact, I insist that they should.
I believe that a painting should not be admired by the eyes alone. I want people to also see how it feels, to explore the sculptured surface with their fingers as well as their eyes.
I work in layers. Each layer of texture and paint is built up gradually. I then use many glazes of acrylic paints to achieve a depth and opulence of colour, often using contrasts to produce rich and vibrant results.
I highlight my work with light-reflecting metallic pigments. These accents, blended with the deepest textures possible produce visual and sensory pieces that I hope will give you an irresistible urge to reach out and touch them."
Clinton Banbury, a graduate in graphic design from Preston Polytechnic (now Lancashire University) began his career working for various London design consultancies.
In 1990 Clinton was briefed by British Rail to design a small publication titled, ‘The Children’s Guide to Rail Safety’, written by Roald Dahl it featured the illustrations of Quentin Blake. Other illustration-lead briefs followed this success.
In 1992, he became a member of the Association of Illustrators and committed full time to illustration. Since then he has worked on over a hundred different projects ranging from an Italian poster campaign for Vauxhall cars, to a series of weekly cartoons for the Times Newspaper Group. He has been selected to exhibit his work at the best of British illustration exhibition held at the Royal College of Art. He has demonstrated his illustrative technique, and signed copies of a series of booklets launched at The National Gallery. Conducted cartoon workshops at Hampton Court Palace, and has be invited into many schools to teach and share his quick-fire drawing techniques.
Clinton started to develop his painting style in 2005 as a respite from the continual pressure of producing illustrations directly to a brief. ”I was becoming increasingly frustrated with the continual needs of the publishing industry, Of course the experiences gained over the years have been irreplaceable and I have been lucky in that I have never been without work. Recently though I thought I’m going to please myself for a change, and see where it takes me.”
The results are dynamic, fresh and modern works, the white space as important as the coloured areas. Humorous, light-hearted characters both human and animal feature strongly. Subliminal wry messages not too deeply hidden compete for our attention with the bright sparkling colours.
Clinton’s art has also proved to be very popular, with sales of original paintings in the U.K. in 2006 reaching over six hundred, and sales of recently published limited edition prints reaching eight hundred.
Clinton is proud to be a Fellow of the Zoological Society & a Member of the Association of Illustrators.
